FREE SEEDSAs the winter closes in on us and our thoughts turn to Spring and planning our gardens. The Berne Seed Library was established in 2018 and has provided the Berne community with over 500 varieties of seeds donated by various local businesses and seed companies—Altamont Agway, Helderberg True Value, Dollar General, Gages, Fedco, Seeds, Hudson Valley Seed Company, Park Seeds, Burpee, Baker Creek Heirloom, Seedway, Bentley Seed, and Southern Exposure Seed Exchange. As seeds arrive they are cataloged and entered into the inventory online. Patrons can fill out an order online or just come to the library to pick up what they need.We recently have received over 200 NEW packets which have been cataloged and filed in the drawers ready for you to take. Seeds are very expensive these days and unless you have a large garden no one usually uses ALL the seeds in a packet. Please be considerate of your neighbors and take only what you need. Envelopes are provided for the seeds you take and be sure to sign out what you take, It’s important to know if an entire package of seeds is empty so it can be removed from the inventory. Please don’t just leave the plastic bag in the drawer!! Let us know so we can try to replenish what is gone. The old card catalog holds the seeds and envelopes to use. The Seed books for Vegetables, Flowers and Herbs all include planting and growing instructions for each type of seed in the collection.Periodically we remove seeds we feel are too old and may not germinate or when we receive multiple packets of seeds from a seed company we offer these whole to the community. These seeds will be up for grabs at the Friends Annual Book Sale on March 23. Stop in for them as well as books!!!!SO—Get busy planning your gardens and SAVE money by getting seeds from the Berne Seed Library.Find the inventory and order form on the Berne Library website or the Friends of the Berne Library.Contact Ann Hein [email protected] if you have any questions.
